International Women’s Day: Safe and Unsafe, a poem for mothers trapped or fleeing Ukraine

News OnTheWight reader Chris Rickards shares this poem for Ukrainian mothers. In her own words. Ed

Do others feel so helpless? We can give money and things, but can never really understand the abject horror of those trapped or fleeing Ukraine.

My simple poem is for all Ukrainian mothers.  I am so lucky.

Safe and Unsafe
I woke up this morning,
Sun streaming in,
Listened to the bird-song.

You struggled up this morning,
Having hardly slept,
Darkness surrounding.

I shower, eat and drink
Fresh water from the tap.
Stroll out into the garden.

You have no running water,
You dare not go outside
The basement where you hide.

My daughter pays a call,
Her children safe at school.
We plan for our tomorrow.

You worry for your children,
Eke out scanty food,
And wonder – will there be A ‘tomorrow’?
