Isle of Wight Radio Is Sold (Updated)

The ownership of Isle of Wight Radio has changed … and the good news is that it’s become even more local.

Ise of Wight Radio Is Sold (Update)A locally-based consortium headed by Isle of Wight Radio Programme Controller, Paul Topping and Claire Willis, former Area Director for The Local Radio Company will be taking it over.

This all follows the UKRD Group gaining control over the shares of Local Radio Company, who previously ran IW Radio back in May.

Other people in the consortium include Ian Walker, who we are told has a wealth of radio industry knowledge, having headed up one of the UK’s largest screen, staging and events companies; and Hedley Finn MBE, a radio veteran.

Keeping it local
Having a local radio station owned and run by experienced people from the area can’t be anything but good.

IW Radio just announced it on their news, rather modestly making it the last item, but Tom Stroud summed up what must be great feelings there by playing Celebrations by Kool and the Gang.

We had heard that other people on the Island were attempting to buy IW Radio and many will be hugely relieved that it’s going to the team who were successful.

Song picks
We’re spotting a theme with the first track after the news on IW Radio today. If you hear any that we miss … let us know.

Post 13:00 news – “Celebration” by Kool and the Gang.

Post 14:00 news – “We’ve only just begun” by The Carpenters.

Glad that they have secured the purchase, rather than other ‘local businessman’ ;)

There will be anger in Mr. Potter’s household

This is fantastic news. Had heard rumours of Dyke and his cronies getting back in, so very pleased to hear otherwise.

Like him or hate him Alex Dyke did a great deal to booster the IoW radio ratings – Taking off the ‘Phone-In’ was a commercial disaster; I would welcome its return, then I just may give Radio Two a rest.

Great news – good luck to Topping and the team. I’m sure the station will go from strength to strength.

I’m sure the Wight FM team are a tad unhappy….

let’s hope it gets more interesting then with more up to date tunes and less ‘safe’ music. No more Alex Dyke is really good for the station, but it needs an injection of sparkle.

They are following their format with the music they play currently, but they will have more flexibility now that they are locally run.

Like Alex Dyke or not his ‘Phone In. is sadly
missed and I bet the loss of the show must have affected the advertising revenue.

I’m a Radio 2 fan now – The chat appeals to me.

Playing mostly modern(? Music) all day does not appeal to the majority of senior citizens and there are a lot of us.

The one that got away.

Sounding good – I hate the idea of all Island media being owned by one entity.

This is great news for the Isle of Wight. Isle of Wight Radio have always supported Island stories and events and now in the future more flexibitlty to do so. Well done to all at Isle of Wight Radio from all at The Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce, Tourism and Industry.

Nice to see that Guardian using a pic of Ventnor for their article on the sale.

Congrats to all on the sale. We’ll be raising our glasses to you later.

Lets not forget though that under Paul Topping Isle of Wight Radio are now suffering the worst set of listening figures they have ever had. He was also the MD at TV12 and in a managerial position at Solent TV. As much as I would love to see this work, Mr Toppings track record sucks. Hi Everyone Sorry to disappoint you all, yes, we did look at IW Radio very seriously and this was one of our options. However because IW Radio was in so much debt, and was loosing a considerable amount every month and the RAJAR figures were at rock bottom it took much longer to sort out which unfortunately put us past our exclusivity date with UKRD. So are… Read more »

A brave face….but not much else.

Isle of Wight Radio has dug itself out of the pit it was in and is now by and far the best RADIO station on the Island.

Why don’t we see the listening figures for WightFM….probably through embarrasment.

I don’t think anyone is dissapointed that WightFM did not take over. When it is going to end…the control of the Island? Newspaper, radio station, television channel, magazine…What’s next, buses? I do not take lightly being threatended to by staff members, and I am not going to hush over my true opinion on the company as a whole. This is terrible news for the IOW! Makes me wonder why that station has been sold? Let’s hope that those people haven’t risked their homes on that place as Paul Topping has been associated with many failed ventures on the South Coast. My thoughts are with the hard working staff in the place who now rely on him for their income!!! Good luck & I hope it… Read more »

More of a Radio 4 man myself but anything that keeps the likes of Dyke et al tucked away in the depths of online radio is very much a good thing. May even tune in for the odd session now come to think of it.

The owner has too much money, too much to spend. I can’t see WightFM making that much, and the Gazette profits can not be huge. It will always be the second best to IWCP/IW Radio etc.

Congratulations, but a brave act. I hope it works out for them. The radio industry, like other media is on its knees. If Rupert Murdoch can’t make it pay what chance do little firms have? Not all at Isle of Wight radio will celebrate for long. They need to save money and that will surely mean job losses and cuts?

“hiding behind a silly joke name” Well I’m just trying to keep it all good natured and in the spirit of things. I think people do have a right to know the figures of Wight FM though. I’m afraid that Mr Shopping’s analysis of RAJAR is flawed for two main reasons. Firstly radio listening is seasonal so you should do year on year comparisons e.g. June 2008 v June 2009. Secondly, being a small station, although IoWR’s figures are published every three months they in fact are averaged over the past year, so the figures published to end of June 2009 represent listening from… Read more »

Absolutely correct. With regards to the previous comments on the old presenter’s figures, they were still at the station when the figures were falling and unless you have a RAJAR subscription, you can’t say if these presenter’s show figures were good. Also, I imagine Claire left TLRC either due to the bid or because once the sale went ahead and the potential sale of The Quay has… Read more »

Not only will Sky be expensive, but I’m not sure it will do much for the audience size. The last RAJAR showed that 21.1% of all radio listening was via digital means, but most of that was DAB. Digital TV (ie Sky, cable, Freesat and Freeview combined) only had a 3.6% share while the Internet was 2.2%, so Sky is probably less used as a way to… Read more »

But there is no denying the facts – Isle of Wight Radios audience is currently the worst it’s ever been – thanks to the current line up? I’ve looked at that RAJAR site & Paul Shopping is right. With all this talk of Solent TV and Sky TV – just out of interest, was there ever any findings as to who and what went wrong? And more importantly where all the tax payers money went?

If so, are we able to find them or was it a ‘behind closed door’ club?

“Firstly radio listening is seasonal so you should do year on year comparisons e.g. June 2008 v June 2009.” That is what was done. As seen again below. June 2008 – June 2009 Hours: 417,000 290,000 Down -30.5% Reach: 38,000 33,000 Down -13.2% Share: 17.6% 12.1% Down -31.3% For a twelve month period that is serious loss across the board. “The station now has a much stronger… Read more »

Been a joy listening to Tom Stroud on the morning show this week.

He and Lucy in the mornings have been much more preferable to Topping and Coombes.

Perhaps Topping should go on holiday more often – or perhaps switch shows.
