Last Friday saw the awards and gala for the Young People’s Short Film Competition, as part of the Minghella Film Festival 2011.
Young people from around the Island had made short films, all that were shown on the large screen at Quay Arts. They were genuinely good.
Each entry was watched by a panel of judges, including Reg Poerscout-Edgerton (Ex-Medina High student and Casting Director of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes 2), Ollie Williams, winner of last year’s competition, members of the Minghella family and Richard Curtis.
Media savvy
They came to their decision, commenting that the entries showed how media savvy the young film-makers were.
Much to the excitement of the collected young audience, the award was presented by Misfits stars, Lauren Socha and Robert Sheehan to Ishbel and Mia Tregear.
Chatting to Ishbel and Mia
After the excitement died down a little we caught up with Ishbel and Mia to find out how they had found the experience of making their film – and winning the award.
They told VB their film, “Love for a cello”, was, “Was fun to make,” although, “We don’t love (our instruments) that much … but we do like playing them.”
Both Ishbel’s Cello and Mia’s Oboe featured in the Short, instruments that they’ve been playing since Primary school.
First big competition
Previously, they’ve made lots of little films, but for only showing at home, so this was the first time that they’d entered a big competition.
They both worked on the film and Ishbel edited the film only using the software that comes free with Windows, Moviemaker, and it kept crashing, “It took longer editing it than filming it,” she told VB.
What are your tips?
What tips did they have? VB asked, “Just do it for the fun of it. If you’re going in for a competition, it doesn’t really matter if you win or not, because it’s really the experience of doing it and having the fun doing it.”
It being a comedy, they said, “It’s really good when you hear everyone laugh at it.”
