Sam Baker Easter Races

Island cyclists head to Castle Combe

Castle Combe, Good Friday 3rd April
In the day’s first race, Dave Cooper lined up in the 26 mile fourth category only event.

This was his first race in over a year, and after some solid training he was eager to get a result under his belt. The race had a large field of at least 150 starters, and the circuit was still wet from recent heavy rain, which together meant for a cautious start.

With no teammates in the race, Cooper placed himself near to the front of the group to keep an eye on any moves. This plan looked to have worked out very well when a split in the field saw the Wightlink rider move clear of the main bunch with a small group. However, a lack of organisation in the breakaway allowed the main field to come back into contact and the escape came to nothing.

Top ten finish thwarted
Unfortunately it came as no surprise when an inexperienced rider managed to crash and slow the bunch, which likely cost Cooper a top ten finish and some well needed licence points.

Despite the disappointing finish, the race went well and points to some good form for Cooper heading into future races.

Third category race
In the following third category race, Wightlink-LCM Systems CRT members Sam Baker and Ian Hayden lined up with another full field for 32 miles around the motor circuit.

As the riders started, so did the rain adding another level of stress to what looked to be a frenetic race. The pace was high from the gun as some of the stronger riders looked to whittle down the number of competitors as early as possible.

Once the peloton had settled down the pace became steadier, but was still too high for any breakaways to form. Wightlink-LCM’s Hayden placed himself near the front of the bunch to monitor any moves and keep Baker sheltered for the sprint. To get a result with only one teammate in the face of large teams in a full peloton was a big ask for Baker and in the end he was swamped in the home straight.

More frustration for the team, but with positive indications of good form and team cohesion to take into upcoming races.
