Island Roads admit first resurfacing scheme not up to standard

The first resurfacing scheme in a 25 year project has been delivered below standard, admits highways PFI contractor, Island Roads.

Readers will remember Island Road’s first resurfacing scheme took place at the end of last month in Place Road, Cowes.

Last weekend, OnTheWight reader OhMy expressed his disappointment at the quality of the resurfacing work, saying.

Have just today seen the first attempt at highway resurfacing by this company, all I can say to them is don’t do any more. What I saw was disastrous, and they expect it to last, no way, for a start it was either cold when it was laid or rolled to late. If laid by machine it’s disastrous, 25 years ago we used to lay about 15 tones a day by hand, and get a better finish, not open to let water in like that is, no insulated/heated lorry’s then, still I suppose it’s called progress.

He went on to add

If I had had my driveway redone and that is how it turned out I would demand it was dug up and redone before I paid a penny for it.

Firm admits poor standard
Earlier today (Tuesday) Island Roads admitted to IW Radio that “the resurfacing of Place Road in Cowes has not been completed in accordance with their standards.”

Island Roads Service Director Paul Herbert said,

The issues have been reviewed at length and I can confirm that measures have been put in place to prevent this type of occurrence happening again. Any necessary remedial work to Place Road will be undertaken by our supply chain partner and this will be at no additional cost to the Council or to residents of the Isle of Wight.

Island Roads have very strict and demanding requirements with regard to quality and performance for the activities that we or others undertake on the highway. These requirements are centrally monitored for compliance and any issues experienced with elements of the service that we or others provide are escalated through our internal processes. This allows us to assess the root cause and ensure improvement measures to prevent such occurrences again are implemented.

We’ve posed a number of questions to Island Roads, and will update you once we hear back from them.

The outgoing Conservative-led Isle of Wight council signed the 25 year highways PFI deal back in September 2012 with Vinci Concessions.
