Work to upgrade traffic signals and pedestrian crossings on and around Coppins Bridge is set to move to its penultimate phase.
The current phase in Lower High Street/Coppins Bridge has been completed this afternoon (27th Jan) ahead of schedule paving the way for the project to move on to its next location – the traffic signals at the foot of Snooks Hill / Coppins Bridge and those at the bottom of the dual carriageway / Coppins Bridge on Monday.
Temporary traffic lights
During this work which begins on Monday (31st Jan), there will be temporary traffic lights at each location which will be controlled by operatives during the day. There will be no daytime lane closures.
If there is a need for lane closures, these will be done at night when traffic volumes are obviously lighter. This phase is due to be completed on 18th February.

“As many people will know, the current phase has involved the closure of Newport’s Lower High Street and we would like to place on record our thanks to the local community for all the support and understanding during works.
“We have worked with local businesses before and during the scheme to plan for and accommodate their access needs and the support of these businesses in particular over the past few weeks has played a big part in helping us finish this phase in good time.”
Other work completed during closure
During the work, Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council were able to use the road closure to enable their gardener to work on the planters at the bottom of the High Street.
Similarly, the IW Council has also been able to carry out improvements to the Guildhall.
Arrangements will be kept under review
Though the forthcoming phase is not expected to have a major impact on travel through Coppins Bridge, Island Roads will keep the arrangements under review and make any adjustment that are necessary and possible.
On completion of this phase, work will move to the final phase which is the traffic signals at Fairlee Road/Link Road/ Staplers Rd/Snooks Hill and Medina Way/Link Road.
This phase may be more impactful on road users and further details will be published in advance of work.
