A row broke out yesterday (Wednesday) after residents disputed information released by Island Roads.
Island Roads had issued a press release asking residents make sure they followed diversion signs during the Lake Hill night-time road surfacing scheme. They’s accused residents of ignoring the signs the previous evening causing traffic congestion and chaos.
Several residents informed OnTheWight that the diversion signs were not in place prior to the roads being closed and rejected claims that they’d ignored instructions.
Signs ‘were in place’ before closure
This morning a spokesperson on behalf of Island Roads told OnTheWight,
“The arrangements for signage around any scheme of work goes through a meticulous process of checking before being approved and published. The signs are then put in place by our teams in a specific sequence with diversion signs being put in place first. Only when the diversion signs are all in place are the road closure signs then installed.
“The diversion signs were in place before the road closure signs at Lake Hill and local residents had been given advance warning of these works and of the diversions in place.
“We have chosen to surface this section of road overnight to minimise travel disruption for residents and would appeal to people to follow the diversion signs and routes that have been clearly marked to limit congestion in the area.
“Whilst it is inevitable that our improvement works will cause some disruption we hope that the benefit for all will be evident when they are completed. We would like to thank motorists and residents for their patience during these essential works to upgrade the Island’s road network.”
