A project to install 85 metres of modern safety railings that complement Ventnor’s historic character has been completed by Island Roads.
Island
Roads worked closely with the Isle of Wight Council’s conservation
officer to agree a scheme to replace the existing parapets in Alpine
Road. The new decorative steel railings match those of the adjacent
former St Catherine’s Church Hall yet have all the strength
required to meet safety standards.
Luke Ward, Project Manager, structures, at Island Roads, said,
“We feel the solution meets both the current highway safety requirements and is also in keeping with the conservation sensitivity of Ventnor.”
“The new parapet solution was agreed with the conservation team and we are pleased with the result. As part of the work, we also agreed to paint the neighbouring parapet system black to match the new parts.
“We’d like to thank the local community for their support and co-operation during constructions and hope they also like the new feature.”
In
order to meet modern safety standards, it has been necessary to fix
the new reinforced concrete parapet beam into the highway – hence
the need for traffic lights during work.
The scheme was designed by industry experts WSP while Isle of Wight contractor Stoneham Construction undertook the work.
Luke said,
“Once again we were really pleased to work with Stoneham – a local company who really understand our wish to deliver modern safety standards in a way that respects local heritage.”
The former church hall of St Catherine’s Church was also used as an Evangelical Chapel from 1976 but is now a private dwelling.
