The Island VI Form are delighted to share that our debating team won the Island Schools Debating Competition last week, hosted by Newport Minster.
Adam, Frazer, Olivia and Sebastian triumphed with their debating skills on the topic of being against deriving energy from fossil fuels. The judges were impressed with their excellent memory and communication skills, demonstrated by not relying on many notes during their debate.
The event was judged by the Lord Lieutenant, Susie Sheldon, the High Sheriff Jacque Gazzard and retired tribunal Judge Tim O’Flynn.
Tough competition
The students met with tough competition from school teams across the Isle of Wight, representing Cowes, Christ the King, Priory School, IW College, Ryde Academy and Ryde School.
Lowthion: This was a real team effort
Island VI Form teacher Vix Lowthion said,
“This was a real team effort. Most of the students attend our weekly ‘Talking Shop’ club where we discuss a variety of big issues facing the world.
“It was a welcome opportunity to meet so many other talented Island young speakers, and we are grateful to Justin Potter, Rob Torrington and Newport Minster for organising the competition.
“I am so very proud of our VI Form team!”
