A woman from Sandown, who now lives in Kingston upon Thames, has been successful in not only raising tens of thousands of pounds for a charity involved in the search and rescue of migrants attempting to escape from war-torn countries such as Syria and Eritrea, but has also attracted over 276,000 signatures on a petition calling for Katie Hopkins to be sacked as a columnist for The Sun newspaper.
Reviled by thousands across the country, Hopkins’ latest comments to upset right-thinking people have been brought the fore by the petition set up by Izzy Saunders.
One of fastest growing petitions
Reporting on the Change.org petition set up by Izzy, The Independent as one of the fastest growing petitions of the year.
Tom Bage from Change.org confirmed to OnTheWight,
“This petition is the tenth biggest started on Change.org in the UK this year, and one of the fastest growing petitions of 2015.”
Known for her offensive comments
You’d be hard pushed to have not heard of Katie Hopkins. A few years ago, she took part in Alan Sugar’s popular TV series, The Apprentice.
After failing to be chosen as the rising star by Lord Sugar, she went onto fame because of her, very often, offensive and vulgar comments in newspapers, on TV and social media on pretty much any subject.
“Remove Katie Hopkins”
Izzy’s petition calls for The Sun editor to remove Katie Hopkins as a columnist after she described the fleeing migrants as ‘feral’. It’s thought around 400 people died in an incident in the Mediterranean on 12th April and around 800 in a second incident on 18th April.
Izzy says,
“I am not attacking her right to an opinion, however I do not believe The Sun newspaper should encourage these poisonous opinions.”
She goes on to argue,
“Presenting these extreme views as normal is dangerous and only encourages further demonisation of immigrants in our own country.”
The Petition is still open for signatures.
The petition is cited by The Metro who report that plans for Katie Hopkins to host a chat show on TLC channel has hit problems as noone appears to want to take part in the show.
Fundraising for Medecins Sans Frontieres
Izzy has also set up a JustGiving page to raise much needed cash for Medecins Sans Frontieres, one of the organisations who has been pivotal in the search and rescue of migrants involved in both the 12th and 18th April disasters in the Mediterranean.
In just five days, a whopping £37,000+ has been raised.
Head over to the donations page or Text MEDI85 to 70070 followed by £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10 to donate.
