Around 50 people gathered in St James’s Square, Newport on Saturday as part of a national protest about the devastating effect of Conservative government policies.
Although the event was strictly non-party political, those attending included people from several parties and groups.
Galpin: Need for increasingly urgent action
Darren Galpin, who has been organising the monthly protests under the banner of “The People’s Assembly Against Austerity”, spoke for the need for increasingly urgent action to help with the cost of living crisis.
Cllr Richard Quigley and many members of the Island Labour Party were there, as was Vix Lowthion and her Green party supporters. The Liberal Democrats were also represented.
Chiverton spoke on behalf of workers
Mark Chiverton of the trade union, Unison, spoke on behalf of workers, and said that there will be another national rally on 5th November, in Newport, as well as in London.
Enough is Enough
Everyone had gathered in support of the campaign “Enough is Enough”, which is saying that ordinary working people have had enough of Tory austerity, and the increasingly unequal society, people struggling to make ends meet while the mega rich get richer.
The five demands of the Enough is Enough campaign are,
- A Real Pay Rise
- Slash Energy Bills
- End Food Poverty
- Decent Homes for All
- Tax the Rich
Islanders desperate for a fairer, greener, prosperous society
People were keen to give their contact details to hear more about the local, as well as the national, campaign.
It was a lovely gathering in the sunshine, chatting with people desperate for a fairer, greener, prosperous society.
