This Sunday on the 28th October Sarah Crabb (pictured), Daniel Van Cuylenburg and Morgan Strange from Cowes, will be taking part in the 10 mile BUPA Great South Run to raise money for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, a charity that aims to help rebuild confidence in young people in recovery from cancer and leukaemia, by taking them on unique sailing trips.
The BUPA Great South Run is one of the UK’s biggest sporting participation events, and the three local runners who are all running the event for the first time, will line up against 24,000 other people to race through the historic maritime town of Portsmouth.
Sarah: “I love what they do”
Sarah works at Spinlock who have been a supporting the Trust for a while, “I love what they do, to give someone the opportunity to get out on the water after spending far too much time in hospital and talk to other young people with similar experiences I feel is an important part of the healing process. It’s designed to help them get their confidence back – I know some of the skippers and they are always amazed by the young people”
Daniel: “They make a big difference to these young people’s lives”
Daniel initially started running in 2011 just as a way to keep fit with no intention to race in events, he then decided to set himself a goal and chose the Great South Run.
Daniel has worked with the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust through his job at OC Sport in East Cowes, “I wanted to do it for the Trust because the work they do to provide support to these children is incredible. It must be hard work both emotionally and physically, but they make a big difference to these young people’s lives when they have been through so much”
Morgan: “Rewarding to support such a great charity”
Morgan is taking on the Great South Run after taking part in a number of adventure races, road races, duathlons and triathlons, all for different charities. He decided to support the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust after working alongside them through fellow maritime charity, UKSA.
“UKSA have worked with the Trust a lot, I think the work they do is hugely beneficial and inspirational to the individuals it supports and helps. The Great South Run is a good personal challenge and it will be rewarding to support such a great charity”
Frank Fletcher, the Trust’s CEO said, “The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust are thrilled to once again have so many participants in the Great South Run. This will be the third year the Trust has had spaces in the run, and to date our runners’ amazing fundraising has allowed us to take over 100 young people recovering from cancer sailing. It’s such a great achievement and we’re very much looking forward to cheering everyone on the day”
