Island’s inclusion with Institute of Technology will bring robotics and AI opportunities for young Islanders

Isle of Wight Conservative MP, Bob Seely, says he is ‘delighted’ that the Isle of Wight College and Island-based sustainable clothing company Teemill have been included as further education and employment partners in a new Institute of Technology (IOT) being created in the Solent area.

The creation of the Solent IOT, announced by the Department for Education today (17th December), means Isle of Wight College students will benefit from upgraded buildings and facilities.

Seely: I want to see a brighter future for young Islanders
Mr Seely said,

“This is great news for the Island, and especially for our young people who will benefit from access to modern facilities and comfortable and accessible learning spaces to support them with their learning.

“I’m delighted Government agreed to create a Solent IOT and that the Isle of Wight College and Teemill are included in that.

“I want to see a brighter future for young Islanders. This means ensuring they have opportunities to access good quality education, supported by modern learning facilities, with opportunities to use the skills they have gained to access employment.

“By building a better future for the Island, we can encourage more of our young people to stay on the Island and build their futures here.”

Lavin: Extending to robotics and artificial intelligence
Welcoming the news, Principal of The Isle of Wight College, Debbie Lavin CBE, said,

“We are absolutely delighted to be involved in this cross-Solent partnership, which will enable The Isle of Wight College to provide higher-level training in the skills which employers have been telling us they need.

“We are looking forward to extending the provision at our engineering centre of excellence (CECAMM) across digital technologies, engineering and maritime. This will include robotics and AI (artificial intelligence), whilst continuing to work towards net zero carbon and the green agenda.

“This is an amazing opportunity, which we are very excited to be part of and will ensure Island students continue to have access to the latest technology and state-of-the-art training facilities.”
