Finding out more at the Going Electric event 2022

Isle of Wight gears up for Electric Vehicle and Green Technology show 2024

Last updated:

With the Island’s Electric Vehicle and Green Technology show just over two weeks away (28th July 2024) the organisers are happy to share the full details of the upcoming event.

The world is going electric. Electric vehicles can be bought for the same price as their conventional counterparts, heat pumps are becoming commonplace and solar panels provide a significant portion of the nation’s power.

This transition is good for the environment and thanks to the incredibly low running costs of electric vehicles it’s also good for people’s pockets.

Head to the Going Electric show
If you are interested in getting on board then the Going Electric show is the place to be on Sunday 28th July 2024 from 10am to 4pm at Newport Quay and Riverside centre.

The show is free to attend, with activities and attractions to keep visitors entertained all day; featuring the Island’s biggest exhibition of electric vehicles and energy saving technologies plus a full day of lectures on a range of topics related to the energy saving and the low-carbon future.

Car dealerships
The Island’s automotive dealerships will showcase the latest electric cars on the market for every price bracket, from the highly luxurious to those whose prices match their conventional equivalents. Leslies Motors, Van Mossel Esplanade, Premier, Staddlestones, Snows and Central Garage will all be present displaying dozens of cars from Mercedes, Ford, Kia, Hyundai, Renault, Mazda, Toyota, VW, Volvo, Citroen, Peugeot, MG Skoda, GWM and Tesla.

As well as the Island’s main dealerships Vehicle Consulting Solent will be present displaying the BYD range that is taking markets by storm and offering advice on leasing and fleet management.

Home energy solutions
Moving to the home energy section, visitors will find all the advice and products that they may need for home solar and battery storage, heat pumps and EV charging, from trusted local firms Engenius, IOW Solar, Island Renewables and Solar and Renewable Installations Ltd.

Marine and off-grid installations
In this year’s marine section Cunningham Marine and Richardsons Yacht Services will be on hand to show people what electric innovation is taking place in the marine industry, both firms are experts in marine and off-grid installations – if you want to power boats, camper vans and the garden shed!

Richardsons will have an electric tender on the pontoon to display the noise and fume free benefits of electric outboards.

E-bikes
We are delighted to have WightBike return for the third year with their extensive range of E-bikes for commuting and off-road fun from brands including KTM, Haibike, Mondraker, Whisper and Moustache.

Visitors will be able to test the bikes on site to get a feel for just how beneficial the addition of the small electric motors are for getting up hills!

EVO driver training will be present to showcase their electric learner driver cars, and the Co-op stores will be showing off their electric delivery vehicle as they begin to transition to a fully electric local fleet.

Finance advice
Cherry Godfrey will be on site to discuss finance for anything that catches your eye and JoJu Charging will be available to discuss your EV charging needs and explain how they are supporting the IW council in the Islandwide EV charging network roll-out.

A platform for the local non-profits
As always, the Going Electric show provides a platform for the wonderful local non-profits that are operating in the energy saving and low-carbon sector. To that end we will welcome:

Refreshments
Local businesses The Island Tea and Coffee Co will be in the refreshment area serving drinks and Plaza ices will be the place to go for a solar powered Ice Cream.

The Riverside Café will be open throughout the event for light meals.

We are happy to announce that the IW College are coming to display the electric car that they use for their motor course, plus an off grid solar, plumbing and electrical skills display.

Local EV owners
Lastly in the exhibition area will be half a dozen local EV owners keen to share their experiences of having EVs on the Isle of Wight, a great way for those who are unsure of switching to electric to get impartial advice from drivers who have many tens of thousands of miles of electric miles under their belts.

Lectures
When visitors want to take a break from looking around the exhibition they can head into the main hall at the Riverside centre where there will be three one-hour-long sessions.

The first sessions focus on ‘Electric transport’, whilst after lunch the sessions relate to ‘The Big Picture’. Look out for more speakers to be announced soon.

Transport – from 11am to 12pm
Matt Whittaker
Matt is a co-founder of Keert the Island’s lowest carbon delivery service.

Keert uses a combination of E-Cargo Bikes and an electric van to help businesses bring down their carbon footprints. Matt will talk about the role E-bikes have in helping people stay active and get around emission free.

Paul Thorley
Paul is the managing director of Vehicle Consulting Solent and a very early adopter of Electric Vehicles. He will be explaining why the best time to Go Electric is right now.

Home – from 12.30pm to 1.30pm
Joshua Matthews
Joshua is the managing director of Solar and Renewable Installations Ltd, and is dedicated to delivering high quality installs to a satisfied customer base. Joshua will explain how contrary to what some might say, ‘every home can have a heat pump’.

Alistair Barr
Alistair is a lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University, Design Council Expert and Director of the Academy of Urbanism.

He has also renovated an Island home to the highest sustainable standards. Hear how he did it in his talk ‘Lessons from an Isle of Wight house refurbishment’.

Big picture – from 2pm to 3pm
Colin Palmer
Colin spent a life in engineering and renewables and is now a director at Wight Community Energy. In his talk he’ll explain the efficiencies inherent in electrification and how they mean the transition away from fossil fuel might be easier than it sometimes appears.

Nora Clinton
In a true ‘big picture’ talk, Nora will set out the challenges posed of the more fundamental dynamics of our economies and how we as humans see ourselves thriving, as a species, in the long term.

Dr Tony Barber
Tony from the IW college will explain their role in up-skilling to roll out the technologies of the future, giving tremendous opportunities to the next generation and providing a viable pathway to a cleaner future.
