Junior Doctors strike picket line 11th April 2023 - Harry Eccles

Isle of Wight Junior Doctors launch four-day strike: Demanding fair pay and better conditions (updated)

Junior Doctors on the Isle of Wight are on the picket line today (Tuesday), striking over pay and terms and conditions.

The strike action began at 8am and runs until 12pm today and tomorrow. Junior Doctors may also hit the picket line on Thursday and Friday (yet to be confirmed).

The reasons for the strike action are explained by the British Medical Association (BMA) as:

During the last two years, junior doctors have made both an enormous contribution and a significant sacrifice. And yet none of this is recognised by the government.

We are calling for NHS pay restoration. Junior doctors have experienced a cut of more than 25% to their salaries since 2008/09.

The lack of investment in wages by the Government has made it harder to recruit and retain junior doctors. This puts further pressure on the NHS and makes it harder to deliver care to the standards expected by professionals.

The Government continues to refuse to negotiate with the BMA on junior doctor pay restoration leaving us with no choice but to call for a NHS junior doctors’ strike.

BMA Council has endorsed a proposal from the junior doctors committee for an escalated programme of industrial action by junior doctors in England.
