Isle of Wight Liberal Democrats welcome national membership surge

This in from Nicholas Belfitt. Ed

Leaders of local Isle of Wight Liberal Democrat party have welcomed the news of a national surge in support for the Liberal Democrats. People have been joining the Liberal Democrats at the rate of one a minute since the referendum result was declared.

Well over 10,000 people have signed up to the Liberal Democrats – and its rising according to central party reports. This includes many on Isle of Wight where there is grave concern over the panic that has followed the result.

Liberal Democrats voted to Remain, but respect the result of the referendum, and those who voted to Leave. The party’s concern now is what happens next.

“People have been let down”
Nicholas Belfitt, Vice-chair of the Liberal Democrats, added:

“People have been let down. The Conservative Party admits it has no post-Brexit plan. George Osborne says it is not his responsibility, and the Brexiteers are already fighting among themselves.

“The Conservatives have put a bomb under the British economy – destroying forever their reputation for economic competence – but are more interested in fighting a leadership election than sorting out their mess. Labour, meanwhile, has embarked on a civil war.

“At this time of national crisis, only the Liberal Democrats are focused first on how we should stabilise the economy, then on how to improve training, housing and schools to restore some faith in politics and improve people’s lives. We happy to see the rise in support, especially from what seems to be politically engaged younger voters.”

Local workshop
The Local party will be holding a local workshop on being a part of local politics. Its being held on the 9th July at the Broadway Centre Sandown 2pm to 4pm and is open to the public.

The workshop is being led by Cllr Gerald Vernon-Jackson, Vice Chair of South Central Region Lib Dems, and the Isle of Wight Lib Dems will hope it increase participation in local politics.

Let’s get some perspective on this. This local ‘surge’ is 20 new members according to the CP report, bringing them up to 120 in total. Local Labour now has nearly 800 members. Nationally our membership has increased 60,000 in the last week or so.

Let’s ask the really important question… What are membership retention rates like for the main parties? I’m sure keeping members is more challenging than recruiting them. How many new members renew after 12 months? How many are still members after 3, 4 or 5 years? I don’t imagine any parties would like to release those figures. Joining a party is often a protest. A show of defiance… Read more »

I don’t think it’s always good to get into a argument of figures in relation to members. Labour may have more members then many parties on the island yet there support in the last few elections has been poor. Behind “smaller” parties. In the end it’s about the politics and how people feel engaged. If your only comment is “well we have more then you” then you… Read more »

That’s a strange comment from a member of a party that polled fewer votes than Labour on the Island in the last general election.

We did. We made a lot of mistakes in that election.

Over the last year we learnt we listened to islanders. And now we are seeing that hard work come forward.

While our core liberal message exists we have to adapt. I am proud to be part of that and not ashamed. Honest open politics.

If you don’t want to ‘get into an argument about membership figures’ then why are you sending out a press release which focuses on exactly that?! I believe that we all – Labour, Liberal and Greens – have seen a surge in membership both nationally and on the island in the last 2 weeks. It’s good for democracy and it’s good for the island. Now more than… Read more »

As I pointed out Viks I think it’s more a message of why people are joining rather then how many we have. Our increase is a suggestion people want a credible liberal alternative, one that will stand up to aggressive, misleading politics. I have not really seen anything that suggested labour rise other then a few individuals and have heard nothing from the Greens at a since… Read more »

Of the three main parties it is only the LibDems that have made clear their views regarding BRexit, in that they have said they will fight the next election on a remain/rejoin EU ticket. The Tories now appear to be determine to pull us out of the EU and the common trade area regardless of how much damage is done to our country. Whilst Labour are so… Read more »

I don’t think that’s quite true, Billy. Labour have very clearly stated their views regarding the Referendum result. As the Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said last week, people have voted to leave and we must respect that or it would make a nonsense of democracy. Labour have in already said quite clearly what they want from the negotiations: – full access to the European single market –… Read more »

The question is likely to be a choice between access to the single market or restricting immigration. The problem here is that all the “Leavers” feel they are entitled to get both.

But which do you want?

It’s this kind of aggressive politics that puts many off.

As many people voted remain on the island then voted for AT. I think that Saids a lot.

Many islanders were mislead by leave, and leave had no coherent plan for Brexit.

If anything it’s now more then ever that the LibDems should step forward.

“It’s this kind of aggressive politics that puts many off.” It’s party politics that puts people off. When politicians seem more interested in the party than the electorate, people are turned off. Talk about party leadership, party membership, party policy does not interest a huge majority of people. What people want to know is what politicians are doing for them, not the party. I’ve heard nothing from… Read more »

We outline our plans and feel free to look on our website. We are the only party that in the last election had a independent cost assement for our manifesto. It’s ok making promises but you have to be able to do them. We learnt that the hard way. We are the only party on the island so has looked at funding proposals and de-regulation to allow… Read more »

“…feel free to look on our website…” Isn’t it your role to take the message to the people, not ask them to come to you looking for it? After a hard day at work, do you think normal working people have got the time, energy or inclination to plough through your uninspiring policy documents? If they did, do you think they’d trust the Lib Dems to stick… Read more »

@DaveIOW I have taken the message I told you a some of the things we will do as a party. But I also believe in individual responsibility to give people the opportunity to seek information themselves. I am not here to parrot the party message but to get people to think about the world they want to live in and to convince themselves. That is what liberalism… Read more »

If you’re going to be a teacher, do your future charges a favour and learn about homophones. As an aspiring politician, simple mistakes in grammar and spelling can immediately undermine the credibility of your message. As for joining you, thanks but no thanks. The Lib Dems have destroyed their credibility. It’s going to take a generation to rebuild it. I am not a member of any party… Read more »

@DaveIOW I know my spelling is bad, and my grammar is poor, I am dyslexic and find it hard to write, but I do it any way. My writing may be poor but my message is clear and strong. If my poor writing is the only thing you have on me then I must be doing something right. I think we have good credibility and more people… Read more »

Nick, Whilst you have my sympathy and understaning about dyslexia, I’m going to be honest with you. The world of teaching can be brutal. The parents of those you’ll be teaching aren’t going to care that you’re dyslexic. They’re going to want you to ensure that their darling children can write clear, accurate passages of text without error in grammar or spelling. You could correct 99 mistakes,… Read more »

Shadow, I suggest you listen to and read media that report’s the truth rather than the right-wing tabloid rags. If you do you will see that it has become crystal clear that Project Fear is now Project Fact. It appears that foreign embassies are being bombarded by applications for foreign passports since the referendum. I am sure that many people would prefer to move but if freedom of movement is stopped then they can’t.

shadow, David Cameron will go down in history as the Tory Prime Minster who broke the UK. If or when the next Tory leader triggers Article 50 they too will go down in history as the architect of the UK’s destruction. I suspect that Boris Johnson, being a historian, was fully aware of this following BRexit and wanted to distance himself from the final decision. BRexit is… Read more »

beacher, Asking the people to vote again because the Leave campaign was based on a pack of lies and deceit is in no way undemocratic. It would be/is very wrong not to rerun this referendum, as like Bank customers were tricked into PPI UK voters have been tricked into BRexit

A large proportion were scammed by BRexiters.

Lets be quite clear, Project Fear is and always was Project Fact. Sour grapes by self appointed arrogant elites, who can’t believe the poor and downtrodden have had the temerity to ignore their betters and expressed a contrary view.

So the “Liberal (ha) Democrats (ha ha)” want you to be put back in your box and do what you are told.

Simples eh?

Here (OTW) we are being subjected to a repetitive mantra from bb – apparently the politicians, a mix of the parties, were all lying one side, and a paragon of shining truth on the other. Clearly a re-run required when undiluted saintliness and righteousness have been denied. Yeah right. On the other hand, listen to and read informed observations without an axe to grind, and there is… Read more »
