Andrew Turner has said he is glad that the Conservative Leadership issue has now been resolved and the parliamentary party must now unite behind Theresa May MP as the new Prime Minister.
After another dramatic day in Westminster, which saw Andrea Leadsom MP withdraw from the contest, leaving Mrs May set to become Prime Minister tomorrow after David Cameron MP holds his final session of Prime Minister’s Questions. Mr Turner supported Mrs Leadsom in the MPs’ ballots.
Mr Turner said:
“I said I would be content with the outcome whichever of the two candidates finally came through, and I am. We had two good candidates and there is no denying that Theresa has the greater amount of experience in Government. That may help in the negotiations to achieve the best possible deal for the UK during Brexit negotiations.
“Andrea withdrew with dignity. With support from only a quarter of Conservative MPs she saw that if she won it would be difficult to lead from that position. Her decision was in the best interests of the country so I admire her for that.
“I was one of the 40 or so MPs who urged the Party Board to shorten the nine weeks planned to ballot Conservative Party members, and thus the time until a new leader was elected. We thought the country and the economy needed new leadership more quickly. The markets appreciate certainty and rallied somewhat yesterday, which is encouraging.
“Islanders should not be concerned about whether Brexit will be delivered. Theresa respects the outcome of the referendum and has said ‘Brexit means Brexit’. She pledged yesterday to forge a successful new role for Britain outside of the EU. I am also proud that the Conservative Party has given us the second female prime minister in history.”
