Isle of Wight residents urged to only use official Blue Badge application service

Islanders are being encouraged to double-check they are using the official Blue Badge application service after reports of people being directed to unofficial websites through internet search results.

The Isle of Wight Council says several residents have contacted the authority after attempting to apply for a Blue Badge online, only to discover they had used third-party websites that charged significantly more than the standard application fee.

The websites can appear similar to official services and may offer to complete applications on behalf of applicants for an additional charge.

Only one official way to apply
The council is now reminding residents that there is only one official way to apply for a Blue Badge online, through the official GOV.UK website.

When the £10 fee is charged
For Isle of Wight residents, the fee for a Blue Badge is £10.

Importantly, applicants are not asked to pay this fee when they first apply. The council only contacts customers for payment once their application has been assessed and confirmed as eligible for a Blue Badge.

The badge is then ordered, printed and issued. By contrast, some third-party websites request payment upfront before any eligibility checks have been carried out.

Council urges residents to check
Laura Gaudion, director of adult social care and housing needs, said,

“We don’t want residents paying more than they need to when applying for a Blue Badge.

“Some websites can appear legitimate at first glance, particularly if you’ve found them through an internet search, but they may charge additional fees for services that aren’t necessary.

“We’re encouraging people to take a moment to check they’re using the official GOV.UK application service before entering any personal or payment details. A few extra seconds checking the website address could save people both money and unnecessary worry.”

Key points to remember
The council is reminding residents that:

  • Blue Badge applications should be made through the official GOV.UK website.
  • The fee for an Isle of Wight Blue Badge is £10.
  • Residents should carefully check website addresses before making a payment.
  • If something doesn’t look right, applicants should stop and seek advice before proceeding.

Helping others apply
The authority is also encouraging friends, family members and carers to help anyone who may be less confident online to access the correct application route.

Further information about Blue Badge applications can be found on the website.
