Isle of Wight rowers Carter and Louis selected for Team GB in France: Your support needed

Carter Horrix and Louis Sheasby, two promising young rowers from the Isle of Wight, have been selected to represent Team GB in an upcoming rowing match in France next week.

Meeting in 2019 at Shanklin and Sandown Rowing Club, Carter, aged 16, and Louis, aged 15, quickly bonded over their shared passion for the sport. Both boys were identified at the age of 12 as having significant potential, and were initially placed together in a coastal double and soon progressed to both coastal and river rowing.

Exceptional support from local rowing club
For the past four years, Shanklin and Sandown Rowing Club has been instrumental in their development. The club has provided outstanding support, coaching, and access to the necessary equipment, helping Carter and Louis pursue their ambition to be the best. The boys and their families are incredibly grateful for this unwavering support.

With the club’s backing, Carter and Louis have competed in numerous regattas across the South Coast and various head races nationwide. They have represented their club at the South Coast Championships and the British Championships, where they won gold in 2022 and bronze in 2023. Additionally, they have represented the Wessex region at the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta, winning gold medals for the past three consecutive years.

Dedication and hard work
Carter and Louis train six times a week, balancing their rigorous schedule with school, additional training commitments, and preparation for their GCSE exams this year.

Their training includes after-school sessions, evenings, and weekends, often requiring travel to the mainland for national competitions.

Selected for Team GB
On Sunday, 30th June, their dedication and hard work culminated in a significant achievement. They travelled to the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham for the British Rowing GB Trials.

After a convincing win, they were selected to row for Great Britain in the upcoming GB v France rowing match in France on 13th July as the J16 Men’s Double for Team GB.

This accomplishment is a significant milestone in their journey towards their ultimate goal of winning an Olympic gold medal.

Why your help is needed
Despite their success, there is no financial support available for young rowers like Carter and Louis. Therefore, they are looking to raise £2,000 to cover the costs associated with travel expenses to France, boat transport, accommodation, and coaching.

Competing at an international level for the first time is a huge step in any athlete’s career. This opportunity can inspire other young rowers and athletes across the Isle of Wight and the wider UK.

Every contribution, no matter the size, will directly help Carter and Louis reach France and represent their country.
