Seely at Wight Shipyard

Isle of Wight shipbuilders possibly in the running for new border patrol vessels

Isle of Wight Conservative MP, Bob Seely, has urged the government to consider Isle of Wight shipbuilders when it replaces its fleet of border patrol vessels, or ‘cutters’ from March 2026.

Mr Seely said he wanted to see the contract for British vessels awarded to British shipbuilders, but particularly those operating on the Island.

Wight Shipyard interested in contract
In a letter to Home Office Minister, Tom Pursglove, he urged the department to “actively consider the options to tender the contract for British vessels to British shipbuilders such as Wight Shipyard.”

He said,

“Wight Shipyard have informed me of their interest in the contract. The company is confident that it has the facilities to make a competitive bid.”

Seely: Our shipbuilders have the skills, the capability and the capacity
Mr Seely visited Wight Shipyard in February. He said,

“Wight Shipyard is going from strength to strength. The number of PAYE employees has trebled and bosses continue to look at options to expand further and take on even more apprentices.

“I’m keen to support them. The expansion of their operations will bring even more jobs and prosperity to the Island – and create career paths for young Islanders into well-paid jobs.

“Our shipbuilders have the skills, the capability and the capacity on the Island to deliver this contract. I am making sure the government knows it.”

So a shameless photo opportunity and meaningless letter for a contract tender that has not yet been finalized and is likely to be released under a government of another party than that of the current MP

Of course every other MP with a shipyard in their constituency will have done the same, but Dr Bob will claim personal success regardless.
I’d have thought border patrol cutters were a bit big for Wight Shipyard – more up Diverse Marine’s street, but perhaps Dr Bob has no personal interest there.

But Seely knows that the Patrol Vessels will be redundant as soon as Sunak’s first Rwanda flight leaves the tarmac.

Not a single person will want to make the perilous channel journey once the flights begin.

The criminal people-smuggling gangs will all see their market collapse and turn to legitimate paid work and charity endeavours.

Unless of course the whole Rwanda scheme is populist nonsense…?

What, Seely doesn’t have absolute confidence in the Rwanda scheme? He must have…surely he wouldn’t had nodded so vigorously at spending £450m on the original deal and then another £1.8m on EACH person ‘relocated’ and still want to spend more money on some boats to, y’know, check the water just in case? Maybe I’m maligning him badly, maybe they’re actually warships. Looks like we might be needing… Read more »
