Thanks to Ian Phillips for this great piece of news from Freshwater. Ed
Local skateboarder and architecture student James Thomas (19) will be upgrading Freshwater Skatepark this week (12th – 17th October) with the help of new collaborative YouTube channel ‘Channel Us’.
James has been challenged by Channel Us to revamp his local skatepark in two 72 hour challenges to be documented over the next two weeks on the new YouTube channel.
The exciting new show aimed at 16-24 year olds is hosted by YouTube vlogging star Oli White and focuses on creating projects around young people’s passions in life – from music and comedy to fashion and sport.
Part of ‘You72’
As part of their ‘You72’ series, each week the channel sets young people a special challenge to create or achieve something ambitious in 72 hours.
Local boy James is taking on the channel’s biggest challenge yet – a two-part double whammy of a challenge to upgrade the skatepark, redesign the layout, construct and install a new ramp and obstacles, and put on a Skate Jam event to relaunch the site and celebrate the island’s sporting talent.
James will be needing help and support from the local community to fulfil his challenge and turn around the revamp in time.
He’ll need help cleaning up existing ramps, and he’ll also need young local artists to come along on Wednesday afternoon to paint boards to decorate the park, create signage and add some colour.
Celebratory Skate Jam
James’ challenge will finish with a celebratory Skate Jam event on Saturday 17th October from 12pm – 4pm at Freshwater Skate Park. Come along to see the newly upgraded skate park.
The event will feature stunts, tricks and competitions throughout the afternoon. The event will include competitions for skateboarders, scooters and bmxers with prizes for the best in their age group and sport.
All welcome.
