Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra Opens Season This Weekend

If you have an interest in classical music, the opening concert of the 2010/2011 season for the Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra should be right up your street.

Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra Opens Season This WeekendTaking place at Medina Theatre this Saturday evening (20th), the concert starts with Benjamin Britten’s orchestration of five piano pieces by Rossini, used in the ballet ‘Soirees Musicales’ and continues with Walton’s Siesta – a relaxing short piece with references to his ‘Facade’ suite.

Wonderful selection of music and talent
Paderewski was a famous pianist, composer and Prime Minister of Poland, whose Piano Concerto will be performed by Agnieszka Plutka, born in Poland and currently studying at the Royal College of Music in London.

Miss Plutka has a remarkable list of competition prizes to her credit and is a respected soloist both here and abroad. The Concerto shows the influence of both Liszt and Mendelssohn with virtuosity and lyricism in beautiful combination.

Petrushka closes the concert
The concert closes with music from Stravinsky’s ballet ‘Petrushka’. The ballet depicts the Shrovetide Fair with its dancing and gaiety and the three puppets – Petruska, Ballerina and the Blackamoor.

It was composed initially as a piece for piano and orchestra but Diaghalev persuaded Stravinsky to score it for orchestra as a ballet. The music is full of dance rhythms and colour and will provide an exciting finale to the first concert of the season.

The concert is conducted by the Music Director of the Orchestra, Jonathan Butcher.
