Flicking through Facebook recently, we came across some extraordinary photographs of the Isle of Wight.
Someone had fused old and new photographs of different scenes from around the Island together, showing how a street scene would have looked, say 50 or 100 years ago.
We discovered they’d been created by Islander, Jason Grant, so got in touch with him to find out where the idea had come from.
How it started
Apparently, it all started when Jason’s wife wanted a photo of her Grandma and Grandad restored. There was a crease running right through her Grandad in the photo she’d given him, so Jason selected a different photo of her Grandad and fused it with the photo of her Grandma.

He says it got him thinking more about old photos and how things have changed,
“So one day I just went out and was going to take a photo of the same place that I had of Ventnor, when I did this I put them side by side and wondered what would it look like if I fused them together, so that I had part old and part new.
“I really liked how it came out, and that is how i started doing all the fused photos.”
Each photo can take about four to six hours to create and matching the new with old can be very challenging. Jason often has to go out and shoot another scene to match the old version.
He told OnTheWight,
“I’ve always like photography and doing my own thing with it, but really didn’t think everybody else would like these as much as I do.
“Hopefully soon I will have some to sell.”
We say three cheers to Jason for his excellent work. We’re sure Islanders would love to see more and reckon there’d be a market for the fused photographs of the Isle of Wight. Think postcards, framed prints, calenders and t-shirts.
