From the Jazz Office:
Following the huge success of our first jazz gig at Ventnor Cricket Club we are pleased to announce that we have a return match planned for Saturday 5th August when we will be presenting a brand new island jazz outfit for your listening pleasure.
Shine is a fresh new band of outstanding local talents who are guaranteed to bowl you over with this, their maiden gig together, as they share with the island’s jazz- loving public their mutual passion for playing modal and blues-based jazz with a definite leaning towards the intricacy and inventiveness of the avant-garde and eastern music.
Led by veteran saxman Ian Thomson, Shine features four great musicians at the top of their game bringing a wide range of experience to this exciting new project. Thomson himself has played in jazz, blues and fusion groups in London for over 20 years, including regular gigs with Little Wonder at the world famous Jazz Cafe.
Al Gubbins is a supple drummer who keeps the crowd guessing with his varied pacing on the skins. He too has played with some top teams, including a five year world tour with the legendary Blues Brothers.
Bassist Alex Black is one of the most exciting up and coming jazz musicians on the island. His fluid fretwork with The Sugarkings has been much admired, and he brings to his playing a passion born of his love for both the jazz greats and more contemporary musical heroes.
Elaine Greenwood alternates effortlessly between keyboards, guitar and her beautiful vocals, which are well known throughout the island and on the mainland. She sings in popular island group Remedy as well as teaching music and leading a samba band!
With a line up like this, you know you’re in for a great night’s jazz music in a great setting. Tickets are only £5 in advance from the jazz office at 6 Pier Street or by phone on 856206: get yours now because to miss Shine’s first ever gig just wouldn’t be cricket!
