A piece of art work chosen by the public to celebrate the life of a famous Isle of Wight resident will be officially revealed on Monday 26 November.

A three-piece enamel design recognising the achievements of John Milne is being put up on the wall of Little London car park in Newport.

Put to the public vote
During the summer, members of the public were asked to vote for one of four proposed designs for the artwork. Following the voting process, the design by Southsea based artist Kevin Dean was chosen as the public’s favourite.

Kevin worked with the project team and local firm AJ Wells to produce the design on the enamel panels.

Unveiling on Monday
On Monday 26 November, Kevin along with councillor Julie Jones-Evans and councillor Dave Stewart, the council’s cabinet member responsible for local services, will officially reveal the artwork for the first time.

World renowned seismologist Milne lived in Shide from 1895 until his death in 1913 and is widely credited as revolutionising the study of earthquakes by inventing a new type of seismograph – called the horizontal pendulum seismograph – while he worked in Japan.

As well as his world-famous seismology work, John Milne was also a keen photographer and some of his works can be found at Carisbrooke Castle’s museum, as well as viewed online at www.historicimages.co.uk.
