Lack of action over raw sewage causing a stink in Brading

In this day and age, when there is a sewage leak causing a potential hazard to residents, most people would expect it to be dealt with as quickly and efficiently as possible.

For the last few weeks, residents in Brading thought this would be the case, but after Southern Water, the Environment Agency and the Isle of Wight council appear to have done nothing about a sewage leak running through through the High Street, they’re beginning to wonder whether it’ll ever be fixed.

Sewage in Brading High Street:Brading resident, Dave Cassell, got in touch this morning to share the news. The problem seems to be coming from the entrance to a private lane that leads to a new development behind the High Street.

Avoid the splashback
Dave told us said that raw sewage, along with toilet paper etc has apparently been running down the gullies at the side of the road for “a few weeks”. He added that “any car or lorry that drives though, splashes effluent onto unfortunate pedestrians on the pavement.”

We understand that the convenience shop is having to wash the floor regularly with disinfectant, as the smell is being walked into the shop.

“Cross the road” say council
The Dark Horse pub have put a warning sign up on their blackboard outside the pub stating, “Warning, raw sewage on pavement. Isle of Wight council advice – use opposite pavement and wash you hands.”

The advice was apparently given to Dave who complained about the health hazard to the council, they replied, “there is a nuisance, but people have the opportunity to walk on the other side of the road to avoid it,” also saying “So long as people are sensible if they realise they have walked in the water and wash hands etc then the risk to health should be reasonably low.”

In the meantime, if you’re walking along Brading High Street, watch out for splashback from passing traffic.
