Isle of Wight teenager recognised at Westminster for inspiring other young people

Brading Youth Club’s Jamie Hancox wins South East regional award at national ceremony

A young Isle of Wight resident who has overcome personal challenges and become a role model for others has been recognised at a national awards ceremony celebrating the achievements of children and young people across England.

Jamie Hancox, from Brading Youth Club, was named the South East regional winner in the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) Young Person of the Year category at the 2026 HAF Awards in Westminster.

Recognised in Westminster
The annual awards, relaunched by the Department for Education, recognise outstanding young people, volunteers and organisations involved in the HAF programme, which provides activities, learning opportunities and nutritious meals for eligible children during school holidays.

Jamie’s journey
Jamie’s award follows a remarkable personal journey.

When he first attended sessions at Brading Youth Club, he lacked confidence and found it difficult to engage in new environments.

Through the support of youth workers and the opportunities provided by the HAF programme, he developed new skills, built his confidence and embraced challenges ranging from climbing and carpentry to food preparation and outdoor activities.

A role model for younger children
As his confidence grew, Jamie became a positive influence on younger participants, supporting them with activities and encouragement.

This summer, he took on the role of trainee junior youth worker at the club, helping to inspire the next generation of young people.

A first trip to London
Representatives from the Isle of Wight Council attended the awards ceremony alongside Jamie and staff from Brading Youth Club.

The trip also marked Jamie’s first visit to London, where he enjoyed sightseeing before taking to the stage in front of HAF teams from across the country, Department for Education representatives and invited guests.

Rhea Martin, HAF delivery officer at the Isle of Wight Council, said,

“Jamie’s achievement is thoroughly deserved and reflects the determination, enthusiasm and resilience he has shown throughout his journey.

“He has grown into a positive role model for other young people and we are incredibly proud to have seen him recognised at a national level.”

The council said Jamie’s success highlights the positive impact the HAF programme continues to have in helping children and young people build confidence, develop life skills and enjoy new experiences.

HAF returns this Christmas
The HAF programme will return this Christmas with a variety of providers offering more free holiday activities, healthy meals and enriching experiences for eligible children and young people across the Isle of Wight.

Further details of the festive programme, including booking information and participating providers, will be announced in the coming weeks.
