Thanks to Nicky Moore for sharing news of this great charity cycle in aid of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Ed
On Sunday 6th May 2012, five amateur, but extremely enthusiastic, cyclists will set off from Largs Yacht Haven on the West Coast of Scotland on a six day cycle challenge to Lymington Yacht Haven on the South Coast of England.
Their marathon journey is in aid of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust – a charity that takes young people sailing to rebuild their confidence following treatment for cancer and other serious illnesses, and the group have set themselves an incredible fundraising target of at least £5,000.
Cycling 475 miles
The cyclists, all of who are based in Lymington, will be covering around 475 miles, and say the idea for the cycle was born out of a desire to challenge themselves physically whilst at the same time raising money for a cause that is close to their hearts.
Dan Ammonds, Hannah Clark and Bligh Julius, all of who work at Solent RIB Charter and The Teambuilding Company, skipper on the Trust’s trips and have experienced first hand how much enjoyment the young people get from their time on the water. They will be joined by Josh Lines and Jason Withers, who together will take on the gruelling cycle challenge in an effort to hit their £5,000 target.
Solent Rib Charter’s relationship with the Trust goes back many years, they support the Trust by providing support RIB’s for the Trust’s summer yacht trips.
The group also have their own personal reasons for wanting to support the Trust and give something back to such a worthy cause. Team member, Hannah Clark, said, “We already support the charity through our employers and I love being able to help on the Trust’s trips. The groups are so excited and happy considering what they are going through or have already been through, they are simply just amazing. Dan, Bligh and I have all had cancer cases in our families so it’s a cause we all feel strongly about.”
Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust
The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a nationwide organisation that supports young people aged between 8-24 sailing on their way to recovery from cancer, leukaemia and other serious illness.
The Trust’s main activity is taking young people on four day sailing trips on board 38-48ft cruising yachts; sailing is a great opportunity for these young people to have a chance to test themselves in a safe and supportive environment and these trips can be a huge step forward in regaining the independence often lost during long periods of hospitalisation.
The Trust gains all its funding from donations, and fundraising activities such as the cycle challenge are crucial to the success of the trips. The group are hoping the money they raise can make a big difference to help get more young people out on the water this summer.
