This from Callum Harris, Ventnor. Ed
Your recent letter, ‘What possibly can go wrong under the Tories in 2024?‘ doesn’t really predict what might be in store for us all in the near future, so let me help with a few thoughts.
The first responsibility of any Government is to protect its people. We saw how Jeremy Hunt, when Health Secretary, oversaw the rundown of emergency stock levels of PPE in order to save money, whilst at the same time allowing much of what remained to fall out of date prior to the Covid 19 pandemic.
Care workers were forced to wear black plastic bin liners. Many doctors, nurses and frontline workers paid the with their lives. “Let the bodies pile high”, was the war cry, which illustrates perfectly how our Conservative government cares for its people.
Overseeing reduction in armed forces
Our world is in turmoil with escalating wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. Jeremy Hunt as Chancellor is now overseeing the reduction of personnel in our armed forces. Huge quantiles of arms are being given to support conflicts in other counties without being replenished on an equal basis.
We have two aircraft carriers that should have a full complement of 35 combat aircraft, yet military experts say we would struggle to equip one of them with more than 24 fighters, not only that, the supporting flotilla of destroyers and frigates only hold enough anti-aircraft missiles to offer protection for a very short period of time.
The game is up
The truth is, the game’s up. The Conservatives really only have one remaining option to retain power, an existential crisis.
As tensions escalate we will hear the Tories trot out the same political trope about Jeremy Corbyn’s lot, Labour, not being a safe pair of hands when it comes to the Nations security.
If tensions escalate still further then we’ll see the Tories say, we can’t possibly hold a general election at this time.
Rich and powerful already preparing
Of course the rich and powerful have already preparing for this having plundering the magic money tree. They’ll have plans to sail off somewhere safe should the preverbal hit the fan.
As for us? Well you’ve guessed, we’ll be left to pick up the pieces, should there be any left. But let’s not worry about any of this, let’s worry instead about whether, or not, Harry and Meghan should retain their Royal titles.
Sayonara.
