Steephill Cove

Letter: Why install railings at Steephill Cove?

We always welcome a Letter to the Editor to share with readers. If you have something you’d like to share, get in touch. This letter from Chad Powell from Ventnor. Ed

I walked through my favourite beach recently to notice there are railings the whole left side of the sea wall!

Not sure about you or anybody else, but I think they look horrid, and loved how you could just sit on the wall and look out to sea, which the view is now masked by a shed load of rails!

I’m not sure who’s responsible for this, but I think it totally sucks.

Response from the council
OnTheWight got in touch with Isle of Wight council who told us,

“We have had several requests from both local members and members of the public to install railings along the seafront because of their concerns about people falling from height onto the rocks below.

Funding has only recently become available to enable us to carry out the work – which does not require public consultation or planning consent – and we have received no objections.

The style of railings was chosen by the coastal management team to match those in place on Ventnor Esplanade which are sympathetic to their environment.”
