Major roadworks in Lake for next five months

This in from the council, in their own words. Ed

Motorists are being advised of two major projects in the Lake are beginning on Monday 29 October which will require temporary lights and diversions.

New roundabout at Whitecross Lane junction
The first scheme will see highways improvements and a new roundabout installed at the junction of Newport Road and Whitecross Lane.

These improvements are being undertaken as part of the construction of a new restaurant and public house. The works are programmed to continue until mid-March and temporary lights will be in use on Newport Road. The Whitecross Lane junction will be closed for the initial phase of the work although will be re-opened in mid-December.

Gas main replacement
The second major project involves Southern Gas Networks gas main and individual service replacements.

These works are planned in Sandown Road and are to take place from Monday 29 October until early December, before resuming at the junction with The Fairway in January until March 2013. Temporary lights will be in operation throughout the project.

Avoiding disruption during tourist season
Peter Hayward, manager for highways and transport, said: “Unfortunately because of the length of time these two works require, it is not possible to schedule these at different times. This is because doing so would impact on the tourist season when traffic flows increase significantly on our roads and disruption would be more severe. The works are however being suspended over the festive period.

“We advise motorists to avoid the area if possible, with those travelling from Newport to Sandown advised to go via Brading, and traffic from Newport to Shanklin advised to travel via Godshill. We do appreciate that these two schemes will cause disruption to motorists but we feel the approach we are taking will at least concentrate that disruption over the shortest time period and avoid the main summer season.”

More information about the two schemes can be found in the roadworks section on the council’s website, www.iwight.com.
