If you’re looking to volunteer and make a real difference to your community, have you thought about becoming a Trustee for one of the Island’s many charities?
It is estimated that there are more than 1,500 voluntary and community organisations on the Island which make an invaluable contribution to the social fabric of our community.
Trustee Recruitment Event
The Isle of Wight Volunteer Centre is hosting a Trustee Recruitment Event at Riverside on Wednesday 21st October from 6pm to 8.30pm.
Those attending will find out what being a Trustee is all about and get to meet representatives from local Charities that are recruiting.
Organisations attending the event are The Phoenix Project, Newport Minster, Friends of St Mary’s, Campaign to Protect Rural England, Samaritans, Isle of Wight Scout Association, Cowes Sailability, Storeroom 2010 and Isle of Wight Society for the Blind.
Do you have the skills?
These organisations are looking for Trustees to bring a variety of skills such as: fundraising, education, finance, governance, commissioning, social media or marketing. Other organisations may be looking for other skills and you can find more opportunities on our Website.
Paul Savill, a Trustee for the Isle of Wight Scouts Association said,
“I have been involved with Scouting for over 21 years, in various roles, and have been a trustee on different committees which help look after the activities of over 1200 young members aged 6-25 and around 300 adults. All the work has been really rewarding.
“I’m now a trustee on two committees. The County Executive Committee shapes and approves the strategy and plans for scouting on the island and considers safety, governance of money being spent and monitors our performance against the plans. It is Isle of Wight scouting’s top decision-making body.
“The second committee looks after our camp site near Shalfleet and although we have many challenges to overcome behind the scenes, seeing young people regularly accessing the outdoors and adventure easily gives satisfaction for the time put in.
“Across the Island there are 22 Scout groups all of whom have an executive committee that monitors the activities of the sections. This is often formed from parents and leaders and is great mix. They often meet in pubs to make it more of a social but still achieve everything required of them by our Policy, Organisation and rules.”
Amanda Coyle, the co-ordinator of the Isle of Wight Volunteer Centre, said
“This is a fantastic opportunity for people to find out about the responsibilities of being a Trustee and the work that a number of charities do without having any commitment to sign up. Trusteeship is one of the most important roles in the voluntary sector. Trustees give direction to a charity and are ultimately responsible for its activities. There are lots of small charities working for diverse causes who could really benefit from the time and skills you could offer them as a Trustee.”
