Communities Secretary Eric Pickles’ Government department is encouraging councils across the country to release information about buildings or land (they call them assets) that they own.
Those that the Government have details of already and been placed on a map that the public can click around and see the details of.
Isle of Wight details
VB jumped over to the Website, of course, the first area we looked at was the dear-old Isle of Wight.
There are five types of ‘assets’ shown – Central Government; Education; Health; Sport Facilities; and Local Government – that are colour-coded.
It’s easy to use. Simply double-click on the area you want to look at, which zooms you in. Clicking on the different coloured icons brings up the details of the building on the right-hand side.
It’s unclear if all of the council’s assets are currently on the map. We’ve dropped them a mail and will let you know when they come back to us.
If you find anything unexpected on the map, please post a comment below and share it with everyone.
Council selling buildings
The Isle of Wight council have a list of council buildings that they’re planning to sell, like youth clubs, tourist information centres, primary school buildings, car parks, school playing fields, etc. They call it the Capital Receipts Programme.
It’s not too easy to find on the council Website, so we’ve embedded it below for your ease.
