The slide at Medina Pool will not be reinstalled after inspections found it to be in a poor condition and in need of extensive repairs.
The slide, which was installed in 1985 with a maximum life expectancy of 25 years, was removed in May to facilitate the NatWest Island Games. At the time it was agreed that the slide’s condition would be reviewed before a final decision was taken to reinstall it.
Investigations have since found the pump and pipe work need replacing and major works would be required on the steel structure which has badly corroded over time. In addition, the fibreglass flume has become brittle requiring extensive work along the surface and joint sections to make it safe to use.
Consultation for other activities
Taking into consideration the age of the slide and the nature of the works required, the council has decided that it would not be cost effective to reinstate it and instead proposes to consult with pool users on what fun activities they would like to see included when Medina Leisure Centre is refurbished next year.
This consultation builds on the work presented to the council by the Save Our Slide campaign which has been on display at Medina Leisure Centre for some time.
Non-viable to bring back into use
Cllr George Brown, Cabinet Member for the Economy and Environment, said: “The slide has provided Islanders and visitors with many years of fun but unfortunately its ageing condition coupled with level of works required make it non-viable to bring back into use.
“Even if the repairs were carried out at great expense, due the age of the slide we could not guarantee its long-term use. We feel resources would be put to better use exploring alternative facilities and activities which could be incorporated into the planned leisure centre improvement programme. The Save Our Slide campaign has made a number of interesting proposals for fun activities that we could consider introducing and we hope to gather people’s views on these throughout the summer.”
