Men’s Art Project hosts Summer Exhibition showcasing transformative artworks in Newport

The Men’s Art Project (MAP) is now holding its Summer Exhibition at Independent Arts‘ Creative Hub on Newport High Street.

The exhibition is the result of six months of weekly sessions where participants have worked together to explore their creativity in a supportive environment.

Transformational
OnTheWight was lucky enough to meet some of those who took part in the sessions and the impact it has had on their lives has clearly been transformational.

The artworks they have created across the three mediums, linocut, photography and sculpture, are insightful and thought-provoking.

Encouraging connection through the arts
MAP began in January 2025 with a clear purpose: to offer men a space to come together, connect and explore creativity.

The project recognises that men often face challenges in expressing their emotions and engaging with the arts. Through creative activities, MAP encourages participants to reflect, share and grow — both individually and as a group.

Building confidence and skills
The name MAP was chosen to reflect themes of wayfinding and personal journeys, with the aim of inspiring exploration of new emotional and creative territories.

Those taking part have worked with artists Julian Winslow (photography), Paul Armfield (linocuts) and Steve Baxter (sculpture) to try out a wide range of artistic practices and build confidence in their abilities.

Exhibition open to the public
The must-see exhibition runs until Monday 8th September at the Creative Hub, High Street, Newport.

It showcases the work produced by the group and highlights the value of creative engagement in supporting mental health and wellbeing.

Funding support
The project has been generously funded by The Baring Foundation.

It has been delivered by Independent Arts, a local organisation committed to changing lives through arts.
