Mortar Shells Handed Into Yarmouth Police Station

Mortar Shells Handed Into Yarmouth Police StationIt’s been an exciting day for the police on the Island today.

Shortly before 8.30am this morning, someone walked into Yarmouth Police Station carrying what were described by the police as two mortar shells.

As a precaution, the Police Station was evacuated and a one hundred metre cordon set up around the station with road closures affecting the High Street, St. James’ Street and South Street.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal squad called
The Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were called to check on them, advising the police it was safe to reopen the station again at around 10:00am.

Island police have reminded that if they find what they think might be explosive devices, NOT to take them to police stations, but to call them

Well done to Isle of Wight Radio news breaking this story early today.

Please don’t touch explosives!
Inspector Andy Treagus said: “If anyone locates what they believe is a suspicious item or finds any old ammunition stored at home which they wish to dispose, I would advise them to phone the Police so we can arrange for an expert assessment and a safe and secure disposal.”

He continued, “Please do not attempt to touch such items yourself or take them anywhere yourself.”
