Street trader:

New street trading policy starts this week

Following public consultation, a number of changes were made to the existing policy which was last updated in 2008.

The new policy, which was approved by the Full Council earlier in July, now requires stall holders to have permission from the council to trade on land where the public has access, regardless of if it is private or council land.

There are exemptions, such as car boot sales and trading in car parks which are for the sole use of the customers of that business.

Other changes now require applications for static traders to display a notice, similar to planning and licensing notices, at the location where they intend to trade. The visual impact of the stall, trailer or van can be taken into account before permission to trade is issued.

New policy gives the council more powers to regulate
Jonathan Bacon, Executive member for regulatory services, said:

“It is important the council has an up to date street trading policy.

“The new policy ensures that although people will continue to see town markets and events, it gives the council more powers to regulate street trading and ensure stall holders do not have a negative impact on local towns and villages or important heritage sites.”
