Whilst we’re on the subject of Island Games cycling events, just over a week ago we spent the morning at Newchurch Primary School.
The reason for our visit was to see the results of a competition launched a few months ago. Pupils at the primary school had been set the task of designing a new jersey for Team IW, to wear during all in the cycling events at the NatWest Island Games next week.
There were a staggering 70+ entries, all of superb quality (see Chris Weston’s selection below), but a winner had to be chosen.
Winners unveiled during morning assembly
The difficult task of choosing a winner fell to Russell Page, the man responsible for organising all the cycling races in the Island Games.
After much deliberation, the decision was made. There were three runners-up, Charlotte Andrews for her squirrel design, Kirren Shaw with her Island logo design and Josie Chapman with her wheel design.
Jasmin Wright’s design chosen for team
The winning design, which you see modelled by Team IW cyclist, James Ebdon, was created by Yasmin Wright, which we’re sure you’ll agree looks amazing.
The runners-up were really chuffed with their prizes of cycling jerseys from years gone by and Yasmin as winner was presented with the finished product – her design printed on the team jersey.
Interview with the brains behind competition
We caught up with Petra Saunders, the teacher who came up with the idea for the competition.
Do take a few minutes out to listen to the podcast below. We also have a podcast with the competition winners to follow. [audio:http://otw-audio.s3.amazonaws.com/petra-saunders-island-games-cycling-top-newchurch-primary.mp3]
Well done to everyone who took part, especially the winners. We were really impressed with the quality of designs. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for Team IW – the jersey is very distinctive so you shouldn’t have a problem spotting them!
