An Army veteran who rebuilt his life after living with PTSD and hearing loss is preparing to attempt a world-first speed record challenge.
Aaron Hilton, from Southampton, works for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s Fire Safety Team. He will compete at Coniston Power Boat Records Week from 2nd to 6th November alongside fellow veteran and co-pilot Lisa Johnston.

Record attempt at Coniston
Together with not-for-profit organisation Team Endeavour Racing UK and engineering partners Amaroq Ltd, the pair will attempt a world speed record using an Aquarius ProCat race boat powered by an innovative British-designed 40hp diesel outboard engine.
If successful, the combination could achieve a world first in a sport traditionally dominated by petrol-powered two-stroke engines.
From the Army to the NHS
For Aaron, the challenge represents the latest chapter in a remarkable journey.
After ten years in the British Army, including operational tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, Aaron was medically discharged and later diagnosed with Combat Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and hearing loss. Losing the military career he loved had a significant impact on his confidence, identity, routine and sense of purpose.
Working in fire safety
Today, Aaron combines his passion for racing with a career in public service through his role within Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, helping to keep staff, patients and visitors safe as part of the Trust’s Fire Safety Team.

Nic Giannoulis, Associate Director of Service Development Estates and Facilities at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said,
“Aaron’s story is a powerful example of resilience and determination. We are incredibly proud to have Aaron as part of our Fire Safety Team and wish him and Lisa every success in their record attempt. Whatever happens on the water, his journey demonstrates what can be achieved when people are given the support and opportunity to thrive.”
Team Endeavour Racing UK
In 2018, he was introduced to Team Endeavour Racing UK, which supports wounded, injured and sick serving personnel, veterans and their families through competitive powerboat racing.

Reflecting on the difference the team has made, Aaron said,
“What the team gave me cannot be measured in trophies, results or records.
“It gave me purpose. It gave me challenge. It gave me camaraderie. Most importantly, it gave me a reason to look forward again.”
Joining the Trust has also given Aaron the opportunity to build a new career while continuing to make a difference to others through his work in fire safety.
He said,
“The Trust has also shown me that recovery is not simply about surviving difficult experiences, it is about creating opportunities for people to grow beyond them.”
Co-pilot Lisa Johnston
Lisa, a former Combat Medical Technician with the Royal Army Medical Corps, underwent an above-knee amputation following a devastating training injury.
Together, the pair hope to demonstrate what can be achieved through determination, teamwork and the right support.
When and where
The world record attempt will take place during Coniston Power Boat Records Week from 2nd to 6th November 2026.
