As we mentioned earlier in the week, St Thomas’ Square is home to a dedicated band of rowers and collection volunteers this weekend for the charity rowathon organised by Nikki Collinson.
We popped down there today to check out the action and have a chat with Nikki, who just returned from getting changed out of her fancy dress outfit, which she had donned for the launch of the event yesterday evening (pics to follow next week).
Nikki told us a massive 800,000 children in Africa die each year, hence the 800,000 metres that the volunteers will row over the course of the weekend.
She started the charity (Africa Children’s Development Trust) in 2007 and has been working hard to raise money and help those in need.
Teams from businesses and public services around the Island have volunteered their time to help raise the target of £10,000 this weekend by rowing, collecting or donating
Nikki talked more about why she set up the charity and got quite emotional talking about the generosity of donators, especially John Christian who has so far donated £3,000.
