The oldest Pub in Sandown gets a face lift

Thanks to Fiona for sharing details of this latest mural by Tony Trowbridge. Ed

There’s a new face in Sandown in the form of a giant mural of a woman’s face on the side wall of The Old Comical pub in Sandown.

Wendy Blake, the owner of The Old Comical, decided that the oldest pub in Sandown needed something to raise the profile and bring greater awareness to this friendly traditional bar.

Spray can art
Wendy commissioned Island spray can artist, Tony Trowbridge, better known by his graffiti tag of Not Dead Yet after seeing Tony’s work in other businesses around the Island, including the walls of Isle Jump at Lake and The Wight Rock Bar in Ryde.

So taken was she by his style that she asked for his signature piece, a large face, to be painted on the side wall of the pub so that it could be seen from the car park and beyond.

Pulling power
When she saw the finished work, Wendy said,

“I love it, it’s amazing! It may even attract more people to Sandown.”

The colourful mural has already captured people’s imagination as they stop to take photos of it as they walk down the road.

Isle of Murals
With the artwork by Holly Maslen on the Isle of Wight Zoo and the ever changing façade at Coppins Bridge along with other murals in towns around the Island, the Isle of Wight looks like it’s raising its profile in the world of international street art.

The Old Comical was made famous by its appearance on Channel 4’s Relocation Relocation in 2003.

Lets congratulate those wonderful Park Keepers but very quietly as IOWCC will try and sell it off our fantastic open space or worse still give it away like Botanic Gardens and Winter Gardens

It’s about the last thing the good people of Ventnor actually own!

Where we go for picnics with the children now the botanic garden has been priced out of our reach for regular visits. A great space- well done to all involved in its upkeep.

This is well deserved indeed. Well done to all those who keep the Park so immaculate. It’s always a joy to walk through, although I do miss the birds in the aviary. What happened to them?

Michael – we have also noticed that the birds have gone from Rhylstone Gardens in Shanklin – must be some health & safety or budget issue!!
