Open Garden at Whitwell

Many thanks to Malcolm Groves from the Ventnor Botanic Garden Friends’ Society for sharing news of another open garden. Ed

The Ventnor Botanic Garden Friends’ Society have been invited by Mr and Mrs Nigh to visit Saxons, Kemming Road, Whitwell next month.

Created over the last 14 years from a ¼ acre of sloping garden with several large trees, the garden is now planted with a fine collection of eucalyptus and cordyline australis interspersed with colourful shrubs and flowers. There are a number of unusual specimens including grevillia (pictured).

Containing three ponds and a wide terrace, there is also a small stream that usually dries up in August.

The lower grass terrace provides a fine view of Stenbury Down.

Coffee/tea and biscuits are included in the entry fee of £2.50. There will also be bring and buy, plant and cake stalls as well as a raffle.

Anyone is welcome to come along and can join the Friends on the day. Regrettably, the garden is not suitable for children and dogs are not welcome.

Parking is available in Kemming Road and access is via a short steep driveway.
