Bob Seely in Parliament

Reader’s Letter to Bob Seely: You need to set an example and resign for Lockdown rule breaking

Vix Lowthion from the Isle of Wight Green Party shares this open letter to the Isle of Wight Conservative MP, Bob Seely. Ed

Your party leader, our Prime Minister, broke the law. Today the Met Police have issued a fixed penalty notice to Boris Johnson for breaking Covid Lockdown rules – rules that he was responsible for creating and imposing on the nation.

Rules that he insisted (on record in the House of Commons) that he had not broken. He is a proven liar.

We felt the sense of duty and collective responsibility
Throughout the pandemic, millions of us followed these rules. We stayed home to protect the NHS and save lives. We missed first hugs and last goodbyes.

We took great sacrifices because we felt the sense of duty and collective responsibility to keep people safe.

The first PM in office to break the law
And now it’s clear that Boris Johnson does not have any sense of duty or morality. All along he has believed that such Covid rules were for us, the little people, and not for the likes of him. And now the justice system has caught up with him.

He is the first PM in office to break the law and he must – for the sake of justice, fairness and honour – resign from office immediately.

He is not fit to be our Prime Minister.

You broke Lockdown rules
In May 2020 you also broke Covid lockdown rules. You attended a low-brow social occasion for the sake of a buffet and a chat, whilst many Islanders had not seen our family for weeks.

This is a serious misdemeanour.

You too should resign
400 Islanders have lost their lives to this virus in the last two years, and many others are grieving loved ones and struggling with long-term physical and mental ill health.

Like Boris Johnson, as an elected law-maker you failed to follow the rules. You too should also set an example and resign.

Your law-breaking is an attack on democracy
Such lies and law-breaking tarnishes all politicians, local leaders and campaigners. Voters incorrectly now believe that everyone who puts their name on the ballot paper must be a liar, a cheat and only in it for themselves.

The law-breaking is not only an attack on the memories of the victims of Covid, but an attack on democracy itself.

I urge you to publicly call for the resignation of the Prime Minister, the Chancellor and all MPs who broke Covid lockdown rules.

Starting with yourself.

I wonder if this has been raised with the IW Council or coroners office or just a further attempt by PCC to utilise the IW as a means of revenue for themselves.
They are already seriously proposing a ‘clean air’ levy on all older cars travelling to or from the ferries because the have to pass through Portsmouth.

Whilst I’m sure that there is a financial gain to be had merging services, unfortunately as ever this will lead to yet more jobs being exported overseas, with less career prospects on the Island, we are becoming a dormitory island with no job prospects for our children. In time the Isle of Wight will just be a place where you come to die.

One smells more than a whiff of politics here.

The IW Coroner has rattled a few cages over the last year, which won’t have pleased many people on high places. It would be a retrograde step to loose our excellent IW Coroner who is not afraid to stand up for the little people and demand answers from those with power.

A reminder of such answer still outstanding after nearly six years. At David Green’s inquest the Coroner said to the IW Council “I trust that there will be a full investigation and appropriate action taken against whoever has issued this information, either by way of a leak, in particular if it’s by way of a leak, or if the information was issued prematurely”. They failed to respond,… Read more »

This brings up the question of Island residents having to go across the Solent to give evidence, rather than Newport, with the additional time, costs and inconvenience that this will inevitably cause.

Another chip away at the Island’s County status?

Here’s an idea – I give it free of charge. Just leave things as they are. An overall saving of £15k is one that could easily be found by cutting the consultants fees who came up with this wheeze or better still the Police and Crime Commissioner’s office/expenses.

For those islanders who haven’t cottoned on yet, this removal of services from the island and the building of houses that islanders cannot afford, this is all part of the bigger plan to become Hampshire. There will be no Isle of Wight except in name only. Bob Seely’s manifesto upon which he was elected was, I believe, one big con. He said he would fight to prevent… Read more »
