‘Opposition’ Councillors To Seek MP’s Support For Lobbying Campaign

This just in from Labour councillor, Geoff Lumley. Ed

'Opposition' Councillors To Seek MP's Support For Lobbying CampaignAt last September’s Full Council meeting the ruling Conservative group at County Hall refused to support calls for ‘real and strenuous’ lobbying of the coalition government for more favourable treatment for the IW, before public expenditure cuts were made, given the special nature of our economy and our population.

Now that we are facing 535 plus job losses from April 2011, leading minority group councillors will be meeting with the Island’s MP this Friday to seek his support for such a lobbying campaign.

Organised by Geoff Lumley (Labour) and Jonathan Bacon (Independent – pictured), they will be accompanied by Vanessa Churchman (Independent group leader) and Reg Barry (Liberal Democrat group leader).

More information after the meeting.

There is no love lost between Pugh and Turner, but the two of them are joined at the ideological hip. They will bury the hatchet to drive through the cuts, have no doubt.

Reg Barry! Isn’t it his Liberal Democratic party that is part of the very coalition government that is forcing these vicious cutbacks onto local councils. Bloody hypocrite.

Well said Robbo. The local Lib Dems are saying the council cuts are nothing to do with them. The Lib Dems have signed up to the coalition and taking the pay. We all know thay Lib Dems say whatever suits them, whenever it suits thems. No principles whatsoever.

Perhaps the local opposition could also suggest some other ideas to those across the chamber: Concessionary bus fares: educate users that buses are not free – use wisely. Park & Ride: Increase parking income by seeking an financially viable service that would free up town centre car parks for economy-helping tourists/shoppers (especially ferry towns). Merge Parish Councils: Reduce disproportionate admin costs, and fairer funding of devolved public… Read more »

Educate users of concessionary scheme? I’ve been trying to do that since it first became free in 2005. There used to be quite a few who would ride around on the open tops between Sandown and Shanklin instead of using the normal service bus which of course was notching up higher costs to the council. I used to hint at them that sooner or later, you may… Read more »

Jonathan Bacon is much better looking than Hugh FW and is very cuddley. (I haven’t tried to give him a cuddle I hasten to add). He is also a thoroughly nice, honest and genuine guy. (I am a fan).

Too few people on the Island seem to realise if they are not paying for something, then someone else is. A bit like those students in the news who expect the rest of us to pay for their (often) Mickey Mouse degrees. The world has changed, money is very hard to come by, some people need to wake up and smell the coffee. Many of these long… Read more »

I hope you never become old and need homecare, ever have a child who needs a good school or is sick or disabled, become disabled yourself, ever have mental health problems , lose your home, your job or need to rely on a bus service , want to use a library , fancy a dip in a local pool ,want to take adult education classes or go… Read more »

How patronising. I need all of those things, as do members of my family and friends. The people you should be protesting to have long gone. Gordon Brown is sulking in Scotland, Tony Blair is hiding out at one of his multi million pound mansions. The Labour party ran out of time and ideas. Never before have a bunch of politicians so badly let down the country… Read more »

Actually, most people on the island didn’t support a Labour government, so it’s a bit ridiculous telling everyone they did and making it seem like your the only person that voted against them. The words you use to sum up the Labour government seem all two reminiscent of our Tory Isle of Wight Council. It’s worth noting they were in debt to the tune of £11 million… Read more »

It’s almost too boring to repeat but it clearly has to be said again. We have the deficit because the government HAD to bail out the banks. Not a choice- unless you think that empty cash machines and panic were an alternative economic policy? If so, you might not be alone – George Osborne said in 2008 that the best route for Northern Rock was to be put… Read more »

This wasn’t started by Blair, he merely carried on what previous governments started. This was all started by Ted Bloody Heath.
How can you blame Blair when every country in Europe is in the same boat?

The banks should have been nationalised without any compensation and those running banks shouldn’t have been allowed anywhere near them anymore. It can still be done. The assets can go towards the debt.Any debt left over, we should tell them to stuff it. There should be one national bank that lends to business on behalf of society for investments at reasonable interest rates.Unpaid taxes by the rich should… Read more »

Eric Pickles Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government said more than 50 Local Authorities have in excess of 50 million in reserves and should tap into these funds to cover the shot term financial challenges. When you have a Council run by Madmen no Government Labour Conservative or coalition can be held responsible.I hope all opposition Councillors can get together and rescue the Island from the… Read more »

So do I Martin. It strikes me that the local LibDems must be in a fairly pivotal position to influence the coalition government. Do you have any sway with them ?
