Options For Future Of Military Road Go On Public Display

Here’s a press release from the Isle of Wight council, issued today – Ed.

The Isle of Wight Council is inviting residents to submit comments about the future of the Military Road.

Options For Future Of Military Road Go On Public DisplayA consultation period over a number of options for the coastal road is underway and will end at 1700 on Thursday 26 August.

The options include building a new section of road, maintaining the existing road, diverting traffic and a new bypass for Brook.

Part of Military Road (A3055) was reduced to single lane traffic for safety reasons earlier this year after a number of landslips saw the cliff receding to the edge of the highway.

A number of issues will need to be considered when deciding the future of the road. This includes the ownership of the land and important national conservation policies, high cost, the value of the road to residents and tourists, and future planning issues.

Mobile exhibition
The information will be included in a mobile exhibition which will be on display throughout August at various locations across the Island.

A number of staffed exhibitions will also be held during the consultation period. These will be held at:

Chale Show: 7 and 8 August
Freshwater Bay Car Park: 17 August 1000 – 1600
Compton Bay, National Trust Car Park: 18 August 1000 – 1600
Brook Green: 19 August 1100 – 1900

An unmanned display will also be made available at a number of locations in South and West Wight throughout August.

Each display contains a detailed report into Military Road and gives information behind each suggested option.

Offer to make comments online
Alternatively, comments can be made via the council’s website where there is a full information page on the future of Military Road.

Comments will then be considered by the council as part of its decision making process.

This is all very well. But the picture (dramatic as it is) is of the car park at Hanover Point… not the Military Road and the landslip in question.

Yes – that’s right. I’m sure many people who live in that area that is affected will recognise its position too. Truth be told, we’ve done so many stories on the trouble with the Military Road, we’ve run out of original images. Given this we used the snap that the IW council had on their site. Perhaps you have some that you could forward to us to… Read more »

Ok its a picture of a carpark. To get to the carpark you might need to drive on a road.Yep the one that is falling away.Once again VB has got the facts, the times, the dates, and the places to have a look at the plans about the MR.Other companies or news agencies whatever you want to call them are not reporting this at the moment.Well done VB.

The landslip is difficult to photograph well and be understood at first glance – this photo is great. It captures the view that you see when driving the road – and the view is one of the most important things (I stress ‘one’ – for me the important thing is to be able to drive down it!) Not impressed that the roadshow will be on the military… Read more »

Don’t expect to see the mobile exhibition at Chale Show because it isn’t there. I asked the organisers about it today (Saturday 7th) and they said that they knew nothing about it.
They were getting a bit fed up with people asking about it but they did offer to refund the admission price, which was very kind.I declined the offer as it’s not their fault.
