Over 10,000 parents sign open letter urging reversal of school funding cuts

Stop School Cuts, a campaign run by the National Education Union, will present an open letter signed by over 10,000 parents to Rachel Reeves today (Wednesday, 23/10) the week before the Autumn Budget announcement.

After 14 years of devastating cuts, 70 per cent of schools in England have less funding in real terms than in 2010. The campaign is calling for a commitment to restore school funding to the same level left by the previous Labour Government in 2010.

Letter delivered by headteacher and parents
Today, a headteacher and parents will be travelling down from Wood End Infant and Pre-School in Milton Keynes to deliver the letter in person to the Chancellor at 11 Downing Street.

Alongside the letter two ad vans will be circulating around Westminster displaying messages from parents to the Chancellor.

The message on the ad van reads:

“Reverse school cuts or Fail another generation. The choice is clear.

Shreeve: 77 per cent of schools on the Isle of Wight have less funding in real terms than in 2010
Peter Shreeve, Assistant District Secretary of the National Education Union, said,

“Presently, 77 per cent of schools on the Isle of Wight have less funding in real terms than in 2010. Even if some schools close too many will still be in this unsustainable position.

“Parents, school leaders, teachers and support staff see the impact this has on children every day with larger class sizes, cuts to music, sport and arts, and a workforce retention crisis.

“Today’s children need more support. If national government is serious about change and quality, it’s hard to see how this can be achieved without a commitment to restore school funding to something like 2010 levels.”
