The wildlife charity revealed 2019 has been a ‘Painted Lady Year’ – a natural phenomenon that happens once in a decade, when unusually high numbers of this migratory butterfly arrive in the UK.
The UK’s butterflies are basking in the best summer conditions for more than a decade, with hot sunny weather enabling widespread species to fly, feed and breed, so why not take part in the Big Butterfly Count.
On the Isle of Wight there have been dramatic reductions in species such as water voles, nightingales and even common species like the large white butterfly. The Hampshire and IW Wildlife Trust says we have to act now to protect our wildlife.
The study found that butterflies in urban areas emerged on average two days earlier than their countryside counterparts, with urban Brimstones emerging five days earlier than those found in rural locations.
