There are currently interim principal arrangements in place that will come to an end this academic year. With two posts to recruit, the advisory panel, along with Ian Comfort, the Group Chief Executive of AET, will oversee both appointments.
- Chair : Rt Hon Dame Janet Paraskeva DBE (pictured), former First Civil Service Commissioner, Chief Executive of the Law Society and HMI;
- Claire Oulton, who has twenty years of headship experience including Headteacher of Benenden, one of England’s leading boarding schools, co-sponsor of John Wallis Academy, Kent, and governor of several schools in the independent and maintained sector;
- John Buckland, an experienced Island based businessman;
- Lesley Holmes, chair of governors at Ryde Academy;
- John Gansler, vice-chair of the management board at Sandown Bay Academy.
Also advising the panel are Libby Nicholas, Regional Director of Education for AET in the South & West and Steve Cottrell, School Improvement Manager, Hampshire Inspection and Advisory Service.
The panel is looking for two outstanding individuals to take up the posts of principal at each of the academies and to lead the AET vision for education on the Isle of Wight. This includes:
- a curriculum that prepares young people for successful futures in a competitive global economy
- highly supportive and targeted pastoral care
- personalised learning and teaching independent study skills, with a digital focus
- students who are prepared for life after school and have the relevant social and communication skills that they will need to be able to form effective relationships in the workplace and in their social lives
- a wide range of opportunities to extend learning outside the classroom
- flexible and exciting learning environments; and
- inspirational role models to bring to life a whole spectrum of career opportunities for academic, vocational, creative and sports minded students.
The panel is seeking two exceptional and committed educational leaders who will provide the stability and continuity both academies require and deserve.
Chair Janet Paraskeva, said,
“Staff and students in both Academies have been working hard to improve expectations, aspirations and standards under the leadership of two excellent interim principals. We now need to appoint permanent heads to translate this into excellent outcomes for all.”
Claire Oulton said,
“AET’s Isle of Wight Advisory Group recognises the specific needs, challenges and opportunities of the Island. We have asked the recruitment agency Veredus to assist in our search for two outstanding individuals to become the next principals of Ryde Academy and Sandown Bay Academy.”
