Nick Clegg is privately furious at the move by David and Samantha Cameron to have their baby delivered in Cornwall – The very heart of Liberalism, as he pointed out.
As for giving the child the name of a Cornish village, that is political opportunism at its most blatant, he claimed.
In response he is urging all good Lib-Dems to give birth in the nearest conservative stronghold, and to incorporate some local feature or dignitary in the child’s name.
“It may seem – ah – childish” he said, “but we have to fight back in every way we can.”
Asked if he would be giving up his Government position in protest, he pointed out that there were simply too many important tasks left for him to perform. Today for instance he was dashing off in his ministerial car to attend a vital conference on whether or not it was desirable to print health warnings onto individual tea bags.
Some things are just too important to allow political considerations to get in the way, he emphasised.
