Members of the Economy and Environment Scrutiny Panel will tonight be scrutinising the 2012-13 Parking Annual Report. The document, which we’ve embedded below for you, contains some interesting facts and figures.
When the highways PFI contract kicked into action on 1st April 2013, responsibility for the maintenance of machines and the fabric of the car parks transferred to Island Roads. Parking income, however, still remains with the Isle of Wight council, who have 34 dedicated permanent members of staff within Parking Services.
Almost £4m parking income
The report reveals that parking income by the end March 2013 dropped to £3,938,786. By comparison the figure was £4,210,987 at the end 2012.
Expenditure also reduced slightly from £1,412,992 to £1,321,330.
PCNs
During the period 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2013 a whopping 27,857 Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) were issued, with 6,522 being challenged.
Challenges – 6,522 (7,288 in 2011-12)
Percentage of challenges received against total PCNs issued – 23.41% (24.49% in 2011-12)
Total representations received – 1,001 (1,009 in 2011-12)
Percentage of total representations received – 3.59% (3.39% in 2011-12)

The stats
The report provides outline figures for how many car parks etc, but also has detail about how much it costs to park in each car park or on-street parking bay.
The council provides,
- 75 car parks, of which 24 are free;
- 109 on-street pay & display locations;
- 147 parking ticket machines;
- 26 loading bay locations;
- 61 on-street disabled bay locations;
- 16 school keep clear locations
- Park & Ride car park, Cowes
- Managing car parks at Co-Op, Cowes & Pier Square/Harbour, Yarmouth
At tonight’s meeting members will be asked to consider the annual car parking report for 2012/13 as well as consider progress with reviewing the current car parking strategy.
